Halloween: Terrifying TV

Loosely based on the 1959 novel by Shirley Jackson, this miniseries plot alternates between two timelines following five adult siblings and the paranormal experiences they had at Hill House. Through the second timelines, we are shown flashbacks which depict the events that all lead to the fateful night the family fled their mansion.

Set in the fictions town of Greendale, this coming of age supernatural horror follows the life of half human, half witch teenage Sabrina as she battles with the evils forces that threaten her and her family, along with the rest of the world. Loosely based on the 2014 graphic novel of the same name, Sabrina has ties to the original Sabrina the teenage witch comics that was released in the 1970s and had a TV adaptation in the 1990s sitcom.

Based on the comic books of the same name, The Walking Dead follows a large cast of survivors during a zombie apocalypse. They have to work together to stay alive while living in near-constant threat of attacks from the zombies or “walkers”. Spanning eleven seasons and over 170 episodes, this post-apocalyptic drama will leave you on the edge of your seat and maybe even scared of what might happen when we turn out the lights.

This American supernatural drama follows Buffy Summers, the latest in a long line of young women who are “Vampire Slayers” or simply “Slayers”. These women are chosen by fate to fight the forces of evil however Buffy just wants to live a normal life. She eventually embraces this part of her destiny as the series progresses.

This American dark comedy slasher series follows the lives of the girls who live in the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority at Wallace University, led by Chanel Oberlin and her gang of underlings which she names Chanel #2, #3 and #5. The girls are being targeted by a serial killer dressed as the college Red Devil mascot, which is strikingly similar to a murder that happened 20 years ago and was never solved.

Set in the 1980s in the rural fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the townsfolk are plagued with the invasion of hostile creatures from an alternative dimension known as the Upside Down. A human experiment labs, which operates nearby, opened a gateway between the two world as well as experimenting on humans in order for them to gain supernatural powers.

American Horror Stories – Spanning twelve seasons, mostly set within the same universe but with various plotlines and characters played by the same cast, American Horror Story has cemented itself in the horror genre as one of the best. Throughout the seasons, we see various different stories with some interlinking with others.

The films primarily focus on Michael Myers, who was committed to a sanitarium as a child for the murder of his sister, Judith Myers. Fifteen years later, he escapes to stalk and kill the people of the fictional town of Haddonfield, Illinois. Michael's killings occur on the holiday of Halloween, on which all of the films primarily take place.

The overall plot of the franchise centers around the fictional character Fred "Freddy" Krueger, the apparition of a former child killer who was burned alive by the vengeful parents of his victims, who returns from the grave to terrorize and kill the teenage residents of the fictional Springwood, Ohio in their dreams.

Set in the fictional holiday world of Halloween, this family favourite follows the king of Halloween, Jack Skellington, and his desire to take over another holiday. Written by the legendary master of gothic cinema, Tim Burton, this stop-motion animation reminds us all to find the joy in what we have.

Another one on this list that comes from the mind of Tim Burton, Beetlejuice tells the story of a married couple who are tradgeically killed in a freak accident and end up haunting their own home. When a new family moves into their home, they employ a ghost called Beetlejuice to help rid them of the living. A critical and commercial success, a sequel has been recently released to further the legacy that is Beetlejuice, the Bio-exorcist.

The franchise mainly focuses on the fictional character Jason Voorhees, who was thought to have drowned as a boy at Camp Crystal Lake due to the negligence of the camp staff. Decades later, the lake is rumored to be "cursed" and is the setting for a series of mass murders. Jason is featured in all of the films, as either the killer or the motivation for the killings.

Fantasy comedy set in 1990s America, this classic family film follows Max Dennison, his sister Dani and his classmate Allison and their fight to send 3 resurrected witches back to hell. Having brought them back to life 300 years after they were hanged by the people of Salem for draining the life force of young children, it is up to them to stop them from finishing what they started all those years ago.

Based on the characters created by Charles Addams and the popular 1964 television series, this film centres around the bizarre and macabre aristocratic Addams family and their strange ways. Looking to reconnect with a long-lost relative and the challenges that comes with that. The success has spawned several sequels and reboots as well as other related media, such as the successful Netflix series, Wednesday.
