International Women's Day : LRC Favourites

Allyson

My favourite books written by women are:

  • Still Life by Sarah Winman - a historical fiction book with beautiful prose, extraordinary tenderness, and bursts of humour and light, this book is a sweeping portrait of unforgettable individuals who come together to make a family, and a richly drawn celebration of beauty and love in all its forms.
  • The Herd by Emily Edwards - a fiction book about two best friends who believe they know each other until one tells a lie.
  • Untamed by Glennon Doyle - It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is the story of navigating divorce, forming a new blended family, and discovering that the brokenness or wholeness of a family depends not on its structure but on each member’s ability to bring her full self to the table.
  • Dear Child by Romy Hausmann - A thriller about a woman who flees from her windowless shack in the woods but the nightmares have just only began...
  • Small things like these by Claire Keegan - This book is a is a deeply affecting story of hope, quiet heroism, and empathy from one of our most critically lauded and iconic writers.

For me, I love gothic fiction and horror. Mary Shelley was the mother of gothic literature and so her novel Frankenstein; Or, The Modern Prometheus will always hold a special place for me. However, I do love Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. The book is a classic and the retelling, both film and the recent TV series are amazing.

For me since I love to read, I have a few favourite female authors who are quite popular on BookTok. They are:

  • Tahereh Mafi - author of the shatter me series and The Woven Kingdom series. I absolutely love her books, she is the reason what got me back into reading with the Shatter Me series.
  • Holly Jackson - author of A Good Girl's guide to Murder series, Kill Joy, 5 survive and her latest book The Reappearance of Rachel Price which comes out 2nd April 2024. I never used to be a fan of mystery thriller but once I picked up the first book in a Good Girl's Guide to Murder, I was obsessed and couldn't put it down.
  • Holly Black - author of the Flock of Air trilogy/ The Cruel Prince series. Holly Black is another author that got me back into reading. The way she could create a world on paper and the way she describes the settings made me actual believe I was the main character and I could see everything that was happening and that was from reading her books.

I could go on all day and talk about so many authors

The book series that I'm sure everyone knows all too well that I think its quite good with the way it's written and how the author makes this story come to life is Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. For those who don't know this book series it's about an orphan named Harry who learns he is a wizard on his 11th birthday when a bearded man named Hagrid escorts him to a magical school for witches and wizards called Hogwarts. As a baby, his mother's love protected him and vanquished the villain Voldemort, leaving the child famous as "The Boy who Lived." With his friends Hermione and Ron, Harry has to defeat the returned "He Who Must Not Be Named."
