A reference for newspaper article generally requires the following elements:

 

  • Author of the article
  • Title of the article (in double quotation marks)
  • Title of the newspaper  (in italics)
  • Page number(s) if the article is from a printed newspaper. (preceded p. or pp.)
  • Abbreviated month day, year of publication.
  • URL if the article is from an online newspaper.

Note:

  • The title of the article and the newspaper appear in italics.
  • If the newspaper article is from an online newspaper, include the URL of the article at the end of the reference.
  • If volume, issue, and/or page numbers for the article are missing, omit these elements from the reference. 
  • If you use a print version of a newspaper article then provide the page or pages of the article after the newspaper title. 
  • If the newspaper article is from an academic research database, then include the title of the newspaper and any page number(s) if available.  Do not include the name of the database in the reference.
