Journal Article - General
A reference for a journal article should generally include the following elements:
- Author or authors of the article. (Surname followed by first initials)
- Year of publication (in round brackets).
- Article title.
- Journal title (in italics).
- Volume of journal (in italics).
- Issue number of journal in round brackets (not italics).
- Page range of article.
- DOI (if available)
If a journal article has a DOI, then the DOI must be included in the reference.
What if a DOI is unavailable ?
- If the journal article is from a general academic research database (eg CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, SocIndex,) then simply reference the article as a printed article - do not include the name of the database (unless the database publishes original content to which it has ownership) and do not include a URL.
- If the journal article is from an online journal and not part of a database, then then include the URL at the end of the reference.
Article numbers
If the journal article has an article number instead of a page range, then include the article number instead of the page range.
