A reference for newspaper article generally requires the following elements:

 

  • Author of the article
  • Title of the article
  • Date that the article appeared in the newspaper
  • Title of the newspaper   
  • Page number(s) if the article is from a printed newspaper. (Do not include the abbreviations p. or pp.)
  • URL if the article is from an online newspaper.

Note:

  • The title of the newspaper appears in italics.
  • If the newspaper article is from an online newspaper, include the URL of the article at the end of the reference.
  • If volume, issue, and/or page numbers for the article are missing, omit these elements from the reference. 
  • If you use a print version of a newspaper article then provide the page or pages of the article after the newspaper title. Do not include the abbreviations “p.” or “pp.” before the page(s).
  • If the newspaper article is from an academic research database, then include the title of the newspaper and any page number(s) if available.  Do not include the name of the database in the reference.
  • If the article is from a news website (e.g., CNN, HuffPost)—one that does not have an associated daily or weekly newspaper—use the format for a webpage on a news website instead.
