Borrowing items

To borrow items from any Learning Resources Centre you will be required to produce your College ID at the helpdesk.

Items that can be borrowed include:

Books - 4 week & 7 day loans*

Journals - 7 day loans

Laptops  - for centre use and home loan (7 week loan only)

Tablets - centre use only

Ebooks - available online and accessed via the Library Catalogue

*These items are clearly indicated as 7 day loans on the spine label

How long can I borrow items for?

Most items can be borrowed for 28 days.  Some items are categorised as a 7 day loan or Reference.  This information can be found on the spine of the book.  Reference books cannot be issued for loan and may be used for Centre work only.

 

Where do I return books and other items?

You can return your books to any Learning Resources Centre.  Alternatively we have Book bins for dropping off books out of normal opening hours.

 

What do I do if I want to keep the item for longer?

If you want to keep items longer you can renew via the online Library Catalogue.  Log in to your account and ‘Renew selected’ or ‘Renew all’ in the checkouts list.  Alternatively you can phone or call into any LRC to request your books be renewed.  If someone else has requested the items you have out on loan you will not be able to renew them and will be asked to return them. Currently, all books are automatically renewed twice unless a reservation has been placed for that item. 

 

How do I check what I have on loan?

You can ask a member of staff to check your account or you can visit the Library Catalogue, log into your account and the items you have on loan will be displayed.

 

Can I access the library catalogue from home?

Yes you can.  Visit the college website, sign into the VLE and click on the link Search Library Catalogue .

 

What if the item I want is not on the library catalogue?

Ask a member of staff for details of inter library loans and VALNOW loans for UCLAN students.

Can I access journals and databases from home?

The best way to access journals and databases is via the Libguide for your subject area.  To access Libguides, visit the college website, sign into the VLE and select Libguides.  Here you will find a comprehensive guide to all resources relevant to your subject area.

Can I access eBooks from home?

Ebooks are included in the library catalogue, however, you may also wish to use the ebook platforms themselves.You can access any of the Eresource databases which include ebooks directly by selecting the textbooks & Ebooks tab  from your Course area Libguide.

Offsite Laptop Loans

Laptops are provided from all our Campuses for offsite use and may be borrowed for up to 7 weeks per issue. Loans may be extended if required depending upon demand, please ask about this at the helpdesk.

Under 18's will be required to submit a consent/agreement form signed by a parent or guardian before a laptop can be issued.

If you would like to borrow a laptop for offsite use please ask a member of staff at any helpdesk for a request form.

Late returns will result in further action taken so please return items promptly. If there is an issue please contact your nearest LRC.

Extended Loans (Learners with ALS)

Learners receiving Additional Learning Support (ALS) are automatically entitled to a double loan period.

Standard loan - 8 weeks

7 Day item - 2 weeks

The extended loan period is not applicable for offsite laptop loans.

Book missing from the shelves?

If you cannot find the book you want, ask a member of staff who can check the shelves at our other locations and place a reservation for you.
